Hey there, my rear CV-joint on my front driveshaft is going bad and I need a new one ASAP. I can get one from Flag Auto Recyclers, but I'm checking here first to see if I can get one from a fellow Jeep enthusiast and give them my business.

Vehicle:
1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited
4.0 I6 engine
Auto Trans
NP242 T-case

Any help would be appreciated!!

OK, so what parts do I need to do the rebuild right? Only reason I was just looking for a new shaft was I was told by a mechanic I took the jeep to that the rebuild kits were more expensive than a junkyard shaft. I am very tight on money right now, as business is just starting to pick up on the train, but I want to do it right.

a jy shaft is cheaper, but chances are you'll have to rebuild it too, or in the very near future. parts you will need are:
(3) 1310 series ujoints, either greaseable or non,
(1) cv centering ball rebuild kit

then any paint if you want to make it spiffy.

you should be able to get spicer joints from theujointstore.com for about 17$ IIRC and the centering ball from coconino for 32.50 or so. napa wants 50 for the exact same part...

Which is better for the u-joints, greasable or sealed? This is my first time since I was 16 that I've had a RWD or 4x4 vehicle so I'm not too familiar with u-joints.

Also, does paint really do much other than cosmetic?

a lot of people prefer the greaseable, if you grease them often and refularly, they will last quite a long time, however, because they have grease ports drilled in them, they are slightly weaker. a decent quality joint will be strong either way.

if there is bare steel exposed, you definitely want some kind of paint on there, mostly to prevent rust. and unfortunately stock centering ball yokes dont have a grease port, so you might want to think about just buying a new yoke, with a new centering ball that has the grease port. might have to search around a bit though, or i could swap you for my old spare with a grease port for your stocker.

Thanks very much for the advice. Hopefully I will be getting all the needed parts next week, I'm going to do front and rear u-joints all at once I think. I am curious though, on my 89, can I just pull the front driveshaft and drive in 2wd? One mechanic told me that my driveshaft goes into the t-case and removing it would cause all the fluid to leak out.

Also, this really isn't a "wanted" thread anymore, any way someone can move it into the Jeep Tech forum?

If you pull the rear drive shaft with the slip yoke installed, then yes the fluid will come out. If you pull the front drive shaft then no the fliud will not come out. I would not change joins that don't need to be change yet. They could last a long time.

Only reason I'm looking at doing them all at once is that the Jeep has about 184,000 miles on it and I am not sure when they were last replaced. This is my DD vehicle, so I'm trying to be proactive about maintenance and not wait till things go wrong before I fix them.

So I can safely remove the front driveshaft and drive in 2wd?

there is no problem driving around with only the rear shaft. only problem is when you take out the stock rear shaft, you brake the seal and the fluid can leak out...
